Itinerary from Piazza Venezia to the Bocca della Verità

This itinerary leads from Piazza Venezia to the Mouth of Truth, located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

The Mouth of Truth is an ancient marble mask featuring a bearded male face with wide-open eyes, nose, and mouth. According to medieval legend, it has the power to bite the hand of anyone who tells a lie.

Along the route, we can admire the remains of the Theater of Marcellus, completed by Emperor Augustus in 13 BC. The monument represents a fascinating layering of history, where the ancient Roman theater blends with medieval and Renaissance architecture, creating one of the most fascinating and photographed views of Rome.
