Itinerary from Piazza Venezia to the Basilica of Santa Sabina all'Aventino

This itinerary leads from Piazza Venezia to the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill.

Along the way, we can admire the remains of the Theater of Marcellus, completed by Emperor Augustus in 13 BC. Today, the monument represents a fascinating layering of history, where the ancient Roman theater blends with medieval and Renaissance architecture, creating one of the most fascinating and photographed views of Rome.

Continuing the walk, we reach the Mouth of Truth, located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

The Mouth of Truth is An ancient marble mask with a bearded male face, eyes, nose, and mouth wide open. According to medieval legend, this mouth has the power to bite the hand of anyone who lies.

The end point of the itinerary is the Basilica of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill, a masterpiece of early Christian architecture that has survived to this day in an exceptional state of preservation.

The basilica, located on the Aventine Hill, is flanked by the evocative Orange Garden, which offers one of the most beautiful and romantic panoramic views of Rome.

A few steps from the basilica is the famous Keyhole, one of the city's most fascinating secrets: looking through the keyhole of the door of the Villa del Priorato dei Cavalieri di Malta, you can see the keyhole. It is possible to glimpse, in a perfect play of perspective, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica framed by the hedges of the garden.
