Itinerary from Basilica of Santa Sabina all'Aventino to Campo dei Fiori
Starting from the Basilica of Santa Sabina all'Aventino, the itinerary leads to Campo de' Fiori. Descending the Aventine Hill, the first essential stop is the Mouth of Truth (Bocca della Verità), located in the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. This famous marble mask, depicting a bearded male face with gaping features, is linked to a well-known medieval legend according to which the stone could sever the hand of anyone who does not speak the truth.
Continuing the route, we enter the Ghetto, Rome's Jewish quarter, among the oldest and most fascinating in the world. The area retains a timeless atmosphere, characterized by narrow alleys, historic buildings, and renowned restaurants offering specialties of Roman-Jewish cuisine. Here stands the imposing Portico of Octavia: built by Augustus between 27 and 23 BC to enclose the temples of Juno Regina and Jupiter Stator, its remains are now evocatively integrated into the façade of the church of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria.
The journey culminates in Campo de' Fiori, a square famous for its vibrant energy. Since 1869, every morning the neighborhood has come alive with the historic market that brightens it with fruit, vegetable, and flower stalls. As the sun sets, the square changes: the lively stalls give way to numerous outdoor bars, making it one of the main hubs of Roman nightlife and a favorite destination for young people and tourists.
