Itinerary from the Basilica of San Giovanni to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore...
The itinerary leads to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Along the way, we cross Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the most emblematic expression of the Umbertine style in Rome. Unlike the Roman Baroque tradition, the square follows a Nordic-inspired model: entirely surrounded by imposing buildings with wide porticoes, it is more reminiscent of the squares of Turin than those of Rome.
A stone's throw from the square is the Esquiline Market, considered one of the most evocative markets in the capital and a true sensory experience.
In the immediate vicinity of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore stands the Basilica of Santa Prassede, one of the oldest and most precious examples of Byzantine art in Rome.
The last stop on the itinerary is the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas, rich in treasures. Of particular note are its splendid 5th-century early Christian mosaics decorating the central nave and the triumphal arch, considered among the most beautiful and best preserved examples of ancient Christian art.
